Chasing the season’s final points in Spielberg
19/09/18 / DTM / Warm-Up
Austria’s most important race track provides a spectacular stage. Located right smack in the Alps of Eastern Austria, Spielberg's picturesque panorama makes for a special atmosphere and the track layout for thrilling races. Nowhere else are DTM drivers forced to cope with such steep uphill sections as at the Red Bull Ring in Austria's Murtal (Mur Valley).
The former high-speed circuit with its unique alpine flair was an object of political controversy for many years. With a history dating back to 1969, when the Red Bull Ring was called Österreichring, the circuit knows many ups and downs, not just in a topographical sense.
Ups and downs of an alpine racetrack
It was closed, even partially torn down, and modified several times in the interest of greater safety. The current track layout allows numerous overtaking maneuvers and delivers thrilling races. The drivers’ standings add to the drama. Spielberg is the second to last event before the 2018 season finishes in mid-October in Hockenheim.
Schaeffler brand ambassador Mike Rockenfeller did well in recent rounds. In five of the most recent six rounds – at the Nürburgring, at Misano and at Brands Hatch – he scored top-ten results and thus points. That’s why the 2013 DTM Champion is tackling the event in Styria in his Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM full of confidence.
