LuK Double Clutch
Double clutch transmissions offer improved driving dynamics and efficiency
Product description:
Playing an increasingly important role in vehicle development is the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. So-called double-clutch transmissions make an important contribution to realizing this.
The clutch plays a special role here. The basis is formed by a manual transmission. This is driven by a double clutch mounted on two nested gearbox input shafts. Even gears are actuated by one clutch, the odd gears by the other. Clutch control and actuation occur automatically or via a second shift gate semi-automatically – in each case without a clutch pedal.
While the car drives in one gear, the next gear is pre-engaged but idle. When the ideal shift point is reached the appropriate clutch opens and the next gear activates in a fraction of a second. The result is driving with almost no power interruption.
Double-clutch driving performance, acceleration and consumption are also impressive. Even when compared to a manual transmission, a double-clutch gearbox can achieve a fuel consumption advantage of up to 6 percent. When compared to an automatic transmission (torque converter) fuel savings between 15 and 20 percent are possible.
Depending on specifications a wet (oil bath) or dry double clutch is used.
Benefits:
- Combines the comfort of an automatic transmission with the sportiness of a manual
- Attributes similar to that of an automatic transmission but with excellent efficiency
- Overlapping gearshift makes interruption of power transmission during gear changes hardly noticeable
- Saves fuel
- Reduces CO2
